The UCR School of Medicine Psychiatry Residency Program participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and accepts applications only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). We require a copy of your MSPE (Dean's letter), three letters of recommendation (preferably at least one from an attending in psychiatry), medical school transcripts and copies of USMLE scores (or COMLEX.)

Exempt employees are paid on the first day of every month with two exceptions:

  1. If the first of the month falls on a Saturday, Sunday or holiday, pay day will be on the last working day of the month.
  2. The first check in the new year is available on the first working day after January 1.


Residents have ample opportunity to earn extra income by moonlighting in various locations at our Riverside University Health System Behavioral Health affiliate. These shifts are primarily in the evenings and weekends, but are not overnight. Only residents in good standing and with approval of the program director can moonlight. The benefit of such internal moonlighting is that faculty supervision is provided in person enhancing the educational quality.

Paid Vacation

Up to 15 working days per year that cannot be rolled over from one academic year to the next.

Sick Leave

Up to 12 days available per year.

Continuing Medical Education

Up to five days available each year subject to program director approval.

Short Term Disability

Disability benefit is a maximum of $700 dollars per week.

Long Term Disability

Disability benefit is a maximum of $3,000 per month.

Malpractice Insurance

Malpractice insurance is provided to residents via UCR, or via the institutional site where a rotation block occurs.

Basic Life Insurance and Accidental Death and Dismemberment

$50,000 coverage included.

Employee Assistance Program

Confidential, toll-free counseling service.

Educational Enhancement & Funds

Residents receive up to five days for educational enhancement time (USMLE Step III, Continuing Medical Education lectures, post-graduate interviews, etc.) each academic year with the program director’s approval. Educational leave time does not accrue from year to year. In addition, each resident receives $1,000 for their educational funds on an annual basis.

Child Care

Residents will be eligible for student rates at UCR's Child Development Center, the programs of which are accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs. The center has programs for infants, toddlers, preschool- and kindergarten-aged children of UCR students, staff and faculty.


Residents will be eligible for the student membership rate at the UCR Student Recreation Center. This 155,000-square-foot facility features a 21,000-square-foot weight room, a 237,0000-gallon pool, an indoor jogging track, a cardiovascular fitness area with 100 machines, a 32-foot climbing wall, 30 different kinds of classes, hardwood basketball, tennis, racquetball, volleyball, badminton and squash, as well as recreation club and intramural teams.

Library Access

Residents will have access to UCR Library resources onsite, offsite and online.

White Coat Access

The Graduate Medical Education Office readily provides residents with lab coats; some participating sites may not offer laundering service.

Riverside is conveniently located in Inland Southern California, in what appears to be the midpoint of access for wondrous excursions. To access the beaches, the cities, the desert, and the mountains all one has to do is take a drive that on average can be as short as 45 minutes and as long as 2 hours.
