The Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Program, sponsored by the UCR School of Medicine, began in July 2017.

Julia Hoang, M.D.

Julia HoangThe UCR School of Medicine Child & Adolescent Fellowship Program appealed to Dr. Julia Hoang because it is part of an institution that encourages the advancement of medicine through research, it promotes giving back to the community, and it exposes one to the full spectrum of mental illness by promoting the recovery model.

She became interested in psychiatry because she enjoys working with a multidisciplinary team while dissecting the human mind and behavior and establishing long term relationships with patients by integrating a combination of pathophysiological, biological, and social elements that contribute to the diagnosis and management of each individual. She grew up in Pomona, CA and attended college at UCI.

Shalin Patel, M.D.

Shalin PatelDr. Shalin Patel is a Riverside County native, completing his undergraduate studies at UC Irvine, majoring in biology, and medical school at AUC School of Medicine in St. Maarten. Psychiatry was an interest of Patel’s that was reinforced in medical school, stimulated by an interest in mental illness presentations and how the field continues to advance as new treatments and studies develop.

His particular interests are in the field of child and development along with studying the co-occurrence of substance abuse in those with psychiatric conditions. He says the UCR Psychiatry Fellowship Program has been a great fit, with excellent faculty, staff and co-residents.
